Church robbery: Court grants suspects N100,000 bail

The church.
An Ikeja Magistrate’s court on Thursday granted bail to eight armed robbery suspects said to have been involved in a church robbery in which phones and money estimated at N2m was said to have been stolen.

Among the suspects is the son of the traditional ruler of Ojokoro Community, 31-year-old Adeola Taiwo.
Others are Agozie Ordu, Amidu Shittu, David Bojuwola, Ismail Mufutau, Ahmed Akinola, Moruf Bello and Mutiu Adeosun.
The Magistrate, Mrs. Abimbola Komolafe, granted the suspects bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
PUNCH Metro had reported on Friday, March 21, 2014 that about 15 armed men had stormed the Christ Apostolic Church at Alagbado, Lagos State.
Our correspondent had reported that the men had struck around 2am while the congregation was engrossed in a prayer session during their monthly vigil.
The pastor of the church, who was in hiding, was said to have identified the leader of the gang as the son of the traditional ruler after Taiwo reportedly pulled off his mask while arguing with a member of the gang over a stolen phone.
Community sources had told our correspondent that after the church robbery, the gang, notorious for their ruthless operation, further robbed three other streets.
Our correspondent gathered that after one of them was arrested during the church robbery, further investigations led to the arrest of nine others.
PUNCH Metro had reported that some high-powered influences had been pressuring the police authorities to drop the charges against the men.
The pastor was also said to have been under pressure to re-write his statement.
On Thursday, our correspondent noted that eight suspects were brought before the court.
They were arraigned on eight counts of armed robbery.
The charge reads in part, “That you Agozie Ordu, Adeola Taiwo, Amidu Shittu, and others now at large on February 22, 2014 at about 2.20am, at C.A.C, Oke Alafia Area, of Ojokoro Lagos in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit; Armed Robbery and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 297 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.
“That you did rob various type of cell phones, laptop, palmtops and cash sum of N421, 105, total value of N2m, property of Pastor Julius Odewale and members of CAC, Oke Alafia and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 295 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.”
The charge added that on March 10, there was another robbery operation at the Adura area, Ojokoro, in which phones, laptops, a wedding ring, and various sums of money were stolen from 13 residents.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge.
They were represented by three defence counsel who asked for their bail.
The police prosecutor, Eranus Nnamonu, did not oppose the application for bail.
He said, “We are not objecting to the bail of the defendants. We have numerous complainants in this case.”
Only one of the fourteen complainants was in court.
The magistrate said, “The defendants are admitted to bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum. The sureties must be gainfully employed, residents in Lagos with three years tax clearance and their addresses verified.”
The matter was adjourned till June 5, 2014.

FIFA cautious on new Nations League

FIFA president, Sepp Blatter
Football’s ruling body FIFA has reacted cautiously to European plans to form another national team competition, the Nations League, from 2018 onwards.
“Competitions on confederation level and their formats are at the full discretion of the respective confederations, as long as they are in line with FIFA’s statutes,” FIFA said in a statement.
“In this context, it is worth mentioning that the qualification modus for the FIFA World Cup is defined based on proposals submitted by the respective confederations for their region. These then have to be approved by the organising committee of the FIFA World Cup, ahead of the preliminary draw.
“At this stage, we cannot anticipate potential future scenarios for the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification.’’
The Nations League was approved by the UEFA congress on Thursday and there are plans that it will partly be used to determine European qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The FCT Administration will receive N1.8bn intervention fund from the Subsidy Reinvestment Empowerment Programme to complete the Apo-Karshi ongoing road construction work.
The Director, Satellite Town Development Agency, Mr Tukur Bakori, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Thursday.

Bakori said the intervention fund would be released to the agency as soon as the budget was passed by the National Assembly, adding that it would fast-track the completion of the project.
“Some ongoing road projects are slow because of lack of fund, but SURE-P has intervened, what we are now waiting for is for the National Assembly to pass the budget.
“Once the budget is passed, the road will be completed within a short time because SURE-P has captured the remaining outstanding fund for the completion of the construction,” he said.
He explained that SURE-P also captured the completion of Kuje-Gwagwalada road on the budget with the sum of N400 million.
The director also listed Galuwu-Shere road in Bwari Area Council.
He put the sum of the project at N2.2bn out of which N989m had been spent by the FCT.
He identified the difficult terrain of the road as the reason for the increase in the initial budgeted sum.
Bakori said the Karshi-Ara road construction work, which started in 2010, would ease traffic into Nasarawa and would be funded through the statutory budget.
NAN reports that Apo-Karshi road was awarded to Mangrovetech Group, an indigenous contractor in 2012 and to be completed in 2014.
The slow pace of the project can be traced to lack of fund, the topography of the road and other unforeseen challenges.
The road, when completed will open up the area and serve as an alternative route to the Karu-Nyanya road.

UNIOSUN SEEKS PROTECTION FROM OPC...

uniosun NL UNIOSUN Engages OPC To Protect Students From Rapists And Other Dangers
The Vice Chancellor of the Osun State University, Prof. Bashir Okesina, says the university has engaged the services of members of the Oodua People’s Congress to protect its students from rapists and hoodlums.

Okesina said this while addressing a press conference in Osogbo on Monday as part of activities marking the third convocation of the university.
It was learnt that the university took the step because of the reported cases of r**e of some female students of the university at their private hostel.
Although the VC debunked the claim that some female students of the university were r***d, he said the management was merely taking steps to prevent such.
The vice chancellor also said the university management was partnering with the police to increase their patrol at places where students of the institution resided.
He explained that students were living at private hostels outside the campus because the university, which started academic activities in 2007, was originally designed to be non-residential.
He said, “We want to transform from non-residential institution to a residential one to be able to protect our students among other advantages.
“When the issue of r**e was reported – although no student came to report such and the report was not substantiated – we contacted the OPC and the police on the security of the area where our students are living.
“We also talked with the police to find out what to do to assist them step up patrol around the university campus especially where the majority of our students reside.
“We met with the leaders of the community on the same issue. Whether the report of r**e is true or not, it is dangerous and we don’t want it to happen. The OPC and the police are involved in security arrangement in the areas and we are all tackling the problem together.”
The vice chancellor added that 20 students among the 1,200 who will be awarded their degrees on Saturday made first class degree in various fields.
According to him, 328 students made second class upper division, while 658 will be awarded with second class, lower division.
Okesina stated that the university was currently running 44 programmes duly accredited by the National Universities Commission, saying the body had also given the varsity the approval to begin to run higher degrees.
Responding to a question on the efforts being made by the university to make its product job creators rather than job seekers, the vice chancellor said that the university mandated its students to acquire some skills as part of its entrepreneurial studies.

PREPARE FOR UTME WITH EASE!!!!

JAMB LOGO1 How To Successfully Prepare For UTME Exam [Must Read]
The 2014 Edition of the yearly UTME examination is here again! In few days time , the academic future of over 1million nigerians will be decided. Mass failure was recorded in Last year’s Exam and this has lead to an increase in the number of applicants this year. As the ”D-Day” draws closer , Naijaloaded.com has decided to share some tips On how to Successfully Prepare For UTME Exam.
Scoring a high mark in the UTME exam is not as difficult as most students think it is , it all depends on your ability to prepare well and heed to simple instructions.
This tips will guide you on how to prepare well and achieve success in your UTME exam.
Overcome Your Fear
One of the main reasons why students fail their UTME exams is because of FEAR! They’re not really afraid of the exam itself, what they are actually afraid of is FAILURE!!.They’re afraid of the consequences that awaits them if they fail they exam.
As a student , if you really want to pass the UTME exam , then you must overcome your fear!!. Look at the UTME exam as a roadblock between you and 10million naira, remove that entity of fear in you and push that roadblock out of your way to glory!!
Study Everyday
Researches has shown that 60% of nigerian students dont read , which has been one of the major reasons why the nigerian education sector has continued to dwindle.
The brain can give out information ONLY when you input data in it , so the more you read the more knowlege you get and that improves your chances of passing an exam. As a student , study hard and prepare well for your exam. Forget all the luxries and focus more on inputing data into your brain!. Spend at least 4hours of your day reading , read according to JAMB’s syllabus and focus more on areas where questions are most likely to come from.
Answer Past Questions
Get past questions of the previous years and try to answer them. Get familiar with their question asking pattern. Every past question has a 3/5 chance of been repeated. Doing this will help you a lot.
Work More On Your Question Answering Speed
You dont have allday to answer a question!. Jamb gives you limited time to answer a question , therefore , it is essential for you to work on your question answering speed. On average you have about 60seconds to spend on a question. Spending more than 60seconds would slow you down and leave you lagging behind. Dont delay yourself on a question , if you didnt get the answer to a question , skip it and move on to the next question. You can always go back to the ones you didnt do.
Picking The Right Answer
This is where students fall into jamb’s trap. The UTME exam is one of the most Tactical exams in nigeria. Its is very tactical but yet easy. The answers are somehow look a-likes. You have four options A B C D , and out of those 4 A And B looks Correct. The real answer is staring at you but you’re too blind to see it!. What do you do in this kind of situation?
If you’ve really prepared (read alot) then it becomes easy for you. In this kind of situation , the first thing to do is to eliminate!! Eliminate the incorrect answers and leave your self with the ones that are most likely to be correct. After that , look carefully at the options once more and try to relate them to the question that was asked. You’ld definately find one that corresponds to your question , pick that one as your answer!

Osaze is a great player, keshi says on Aljazera.

osaze keshi Osaze Is A Great Player Keshi Confesses
Coach, Stephen Keshi has praised Super Eagles and Stoke City forward, Osaze Odemwingie as a great player and professional whose character is not out of place.
In a down-to-earth interview with cable network, Aljazera, Keshi said that he cannot disqualify him from playing for Nigeria. “If he’s stubborn, that doesn’t mean he can’t play for the national side. He’s stubborn because of the way he was talked to or the way he was approached,” Keshi told Aljazera.
Excerpts:
Al Jazeera: Brazil 2014 is on the horizon. Nigerians are excited. You’ve set the bar high by winning the African Cup of Nations. What are your expectations for the summer?
Stephen Keshi: I just hope that my players are in good health. That’s key for us. Before the Mexico game [friendly], I lost Bright Dike and I would’ve loved to have him there. Now he’s out of the World Cup. After that, I’m just going to take it match by match.
AJ: Every player has glowing things to say about you. How does that make you feel as coach?
SK: I wasn’t aware of that since we’ve never been that close that we talk about such things. I’m very transparent with them. My oldest son is 31 so most of them could be my kid’s age. I have to be honest with them. I tell them the way I go about life beyond football because after they leave the sport, they need to know there’s another life, a very complex one, ahead.

AJ: What has been the key for you because they’ve had clashes with Nigerian and foreign coaches in the past?

SK: I have an open communication line. I talk like they’re all adults. You must listen to them, you must respect them. They appreciate that.
When I wanted to bring in John Obi Mikel, I left him out. I told him he had problems with Nigerians, he had the big-player mentality. He called me and said he’d like to come back to the national team but I refused and hung up.
He called back again and asked me to hear him out. I told him I was trying to build a team and these players were respectful, they gave their hearts out. They wanted to play for Nigeria and ensure the team does well. You won’t do that for us, we don’t need you, I told him that.
His agent called and I refused to talk to him. So Mikel called back again and I said let’s talk. At that point, almost 80% of Nigerians didn’t want to see him in the national squad. And I told him that. But I also took the risk and he agreed to the conditions. Ever since then, he’s been a great professional with great attitude in training. He’s a different Mikel and I told him to enjoy his game and have fun.

AJ: How did that work?

SK: We’re open. There is no superstar in this team. Everybody works for one another. You have 170 million people in Nigeria and if you leave, there will be somebody else to take your place. Everybody thinks anyone playing abroad is ready and is a great player but that’s not true.

AJ: Last time we spoke, before the World Cup qualifier against Ethiopia, you were sure about 80% of your team composition. Is that still the case?
SK: It’s still a good number but that doesn’t mean that if I see one of two available players, I won’t bring them in. If they’re better than the ones I have, I will include them.

AJ: There’s a story out there that you were critical of Ikechukwu Uche?

SK: I don’t want to go there again. I’ve talked extensively about that and I don’t have any bad feelings with him. My aim is the national team. I’m responsible for that. Nigerians have entrusted me with this job. I have to do what I have to do. I want to move ahead and talk about players here not the ones not in the camp.

AJ: Peter Odemwingie, does he fit into your system?

SK: Why not?

AJ: So you’re saying there’s a chance Odemwingie might be a part of your 30-man squad?
SK: He’s a Nigerian, isn’t he? And he’s doing well.
AJ: But Peter, allegedly, is a very stubborn player. He has allegedly had problems with every coach he’s played for.
SK: We’re all stubborn. It’s just how we manage the player. I just need to be able to manage the player and that’s it. Odemwingie is a great player and a great person. If he’s stubborn, that doesn’t mean he can’t play for the national side. He’s stubborn because of the way he was talked to or the way he was approached.

AJ: So I’m hearing that Odemwingie will be a part of your 30-man squad?

SK: I didn’t tell you that.

AJ: Joseph Yobo?

SK: Maybe. He’s playing in one of the biggest leagues in the world.

AJ: But you have a great centre-back pairing in Godfrey Oboabona and Kenneth Omeruo?

SK: I know that.

AJ: You’re lighting fire underneath your players because you’re telling your starters that they’re not guaranteed a place.

SK: There are no guaranteed shirts for anyone. You have to work hard to play for me.

I Still Live In The Village

When asked how she has been coping as a widow for 14 years, Patience Ozokwor told
the Sun

"I still live in my village. It is nice to live in the countryside where everyone is everybody’s business. If you see the way people appreciate me in my village, whenever I go to the market to shop everyone will be calling me ‘Mama G’, ‘Gee’ for general, in fact, you will appreciate me more. But my office is located in Enugu town. So, I enjoy living in the village, my hometown. I still live my life of simplicity regardless of fame.God has always been on my side because without Him there is nothing we can do.
Again, maybe if I were living in the city, things would be happening to me and nobody will know what I was passing through. And my people in the village know that I am always on location working either in the eastern part of the country or Lagos and Abuja. But when I am not working you will see me in the comfort of my home in the village. I appreciate my people for all their love and peaceful co-existence which I am enjoying. "

Court Declares FRSC’s New Number Plates illegal

The new number plates introduced by the Federal Road Safety Commission, is unconstitutional, a Federal High Court in Lagos said yesterday Wednesday March 26th.

Premium Times reports
Delivering judgment in a suit filed by Emmanuel Ofoegbu, a lawyer, against the FRSC, the judge said that it was unlawful for the commission to impose the new number plates on Nigerians, where no existing law permitted it.
“The issue of redesigning new number plates by the respondent, is not covered under the provisions of any law in Nigeria,” said James Tsoho, the judge.

“The respondent (FRSC) cannot force Nigerians to acquire new plate numbers by impounding cars, without the backing of any legislation to that effect.
“I hold that the act of the respondent amounts to an arbitrary use of power, and is therefore illegal and unconstitutional.
“Judgment is therefore entered in favour of the plaintiff, and all the reliefs sought is hereby granted, I so hold,” the judge added.

Mr. Ofoegbu filed the suit on September 30, 2013, through a Human Rights Activists, Ogedi Ogu, challenging the power of the FRSC to impound vehicles of motorists who failed to acquire the new numbers.

Mr. Ofoegbu had sought a declaration that the threat by the FRSC to impound vehicles of motorists, who failed to acquire the new number plates, was invalid and unconstitutional.

In his statement of facts, the plaintiff averred that the old plate numbers were issued under the provisions of the National Road Traffic Regulations (NRTR) 2004.

He averred that the NRTR 2004, is a subsidiary legislation made under the FRSC Act, Laws of the Federation as revised in 2004.

According to the plaintiff, the NRTR 2012, in Regulations 230 (2), provides that “the revocation of the 2004 Regulations, shall not affect anything done, or purported to be done pursuant to that Regulation”

Mr. Ofoegbu stated that there is no law made in accordance with the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which prohibits the use of the old plate numbers, or declares its use as an offence.

MTN BEGINS CELEB LOOK-ALIKE

MTN Ambassadors are generating excitement among the youth, especially the followers of the entertainment industry, as the likes of Wizkid, Davido, Iyanya, Kcee, Don Jazzy, Praiz, Tiwa Savage, Chidinma, iMike and Harrysong  go in search of their look-alikes. Supported by the largest ICT company in Africa, the initiative will give the over 70,000,000
youth population an opportunity to share the spotlight with some of the finest musical superstars in the country. In addition, a VIP treat and invitations to exclusive youth parties, with the celebrities in attendance, are already in place for the look-alikes and fans.
Speaking with one of the artistes, Iyanya Mbuk, he said “the objective of this youth-centric, entertaining initiative is to connect the teeming youth population, who cherish stardom and have been supportive, with their favourite artistes as well as help fans in general bond with the music industry in Nigeria”.

The “Kukere” master further mentioned that the selection, which has already begun, is taking place on MTN Twitter handle, Facebook page and Instagram account because the company has the largest subscriber base and technology that will make the process smoother and effective.

He therefore urged interested youths to be part of this laudable project by tagging their pictures with their look-alike artiste names and follow each entry with hashtag #MTNCelebdouble. More so, the Project Fame winner mentioned that the procedure includes subscription for any of the artistes Callertunez.
In a bid to generate more excitement, the artistes have decided that the top two most look-alikes, for each of the artistes, will be selected for an all-expenses paid VIP day with the full perks of being a star at an exclusive location before a once-in-a-lifetime party at three clubs spread across the western and eastern regions of Nigeria. Information gathered further reveals that the parties which will take place on the same day will have an even spread of the superstars and their look-alikes.

BOWEN UNIVERSITY SHUT DOWN

The management of Bowen University this morning closed the school indefinitely following students' protest last night. Students of the private uni. say they are
protesting scarcity of electricity, water and plans by the university to increase school fees. The students say they are not being treated right

"They take the light by 8am, and bring it back by 8pm and it goes off by 11pm again. We don't have water, no socket light, while our lecturers are in AC offices and cars. We have time table for eating. 7-9am for breakfast, 12-3 for lunch and 6-8 for dinner. Most times we have classes during these periods" one student told me.
All students have been asked to leave the university...while some students who were detained last night after the riot are yet to be released.

Our dear president, we write this letter to you with great passion, and in a state of curiosity and concern.
We understand your zeal as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to invest in the next generation of the country’s youths by presenting a budget that contains reasonable projects that are aimed at tackling the far-reaching malady of UNEMPLOYMENT in our beloved country, Nigeria.

But, it is so unfortunate that the unemployed graduates of Nigerian institutions of higher learning have no representatives at the ongoing National Conference. Having read the modalities of the National Conference and the components involved, we are convinced without prejudice or doubt, that our children would blame us if we fail to inform you, Mr. President, of the mockery of the committee as a result of misplaced priorities.
Mr. President Sir, the only common element which costs less, and can solve the myriad of problems faced by most Nigerians is EMPLOYMENT.
Unemployment is a big challenge in Nigeria, which over the years has represented a lost opportunity for national economic development. With the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) putting the current rate of unemployed Nigerians at 23.9 per cent, up from 21.1 per cent in 2010 and 19.7 per cent in 2009, the rising unemployment rate in Nigeria has in no small measure contributed to the continuous rise in social vices like terrorism, political thuggery, violence and even teenage pregnancies among youths in many parts of the country.
In view of these, the Association of Nigerian Graduates against Unemployment, an association of well cultured youths and intellectuals, was formed. We represent the frustrated  and angry youths in the society, forced to act after going through the 492 political selections for the National Conference and noticing the deafening silence concerning unemployment and the unemployed.
We are happy you know, according to statements credited to you, that Nigerians are already talking about their national challenges through the print, electronic and social media and this is how we intend to make our voices heard.
The political selections will only give the same answers and report only what they feel you would be comfortable hearing. The truth, Mr. President, is far from comfortable. What affects us is UNEMPLOYMENT, and we want you to take a critical look at the following issues:
1. Contract Staffing – This is in fact one of the biggest problems hindering graduates from getting jobs. Most of those assumed to be workers in most industries, firms and companies are in fact, not permanent staff. They are all under-employed and are also competing with fresh graduates for any available vacancy.
2. Age limit as a prerequisite for employment opportunities.
3. The issue of years of experience by several government ministries and parastatals.
4. Employment not being on merit.
5. Provision of social welfare for all unemployed
graduates and more for the physically challenged graduates. (Return to the quota for each firm to employ, as a percentage of their total workforce, a specific percentage of physically challenged graduates)
Mr. President, from the various statistics we have from the National Bureau of Statistics, and other sources, the number of unemployed citizens ranges from 30 to 45 million, and that is about the population of five major cities in Nigeria. An average of 4.5 million graduates enter into the job market annually with no access to soft loans or any type of enabling environment coupled with epileptic power supply, even after the privatization of PHCN.
The “YouWin” programme is more like and very similar to the visa lottery game, where only lucky winners are empowered and only the families of public office holders and those in government get the little available jobs. We are citizens and should also be given access to enjoy social facilities like those in government e.g. NHIS scheme. We are products of our society and we want to be treated equally like those in government.
We passed through various challenges and delays in school such as ASUU strikes, late school enrolment due to poverty and/or ignorance, bureaucratic arrangement in government, unfortunate policies and administrative problems.
Mr. President, we live in a country where people now sell jobs. Everyone had hitherto been quiet about this completely unacceptable and despicable act and it must be looked into. We are human capital, and this is by far, the greatest asset any country can have. We are worth more than the oil in the South-South or the pepper from the North. We cannot afford to sit down and watch ourselves waste away anymore.
Our dear president, we commend you for what has been done so far in addressing the issue of unemployment such as NDE, YouWin and others, but we are asking that you help us to help this nation and youth restiveness caused by unemployment by empowering us.
We are tired of running out of our fatherland to foreign countries and yet treated and addressed as third class citizens through Visa bonding and the rest, when our country is blessed.
The stakes are high now and we are using this opportunity to address the polity that this association is not a political movement or a violent sect. We are a pressure group crying out in splinters but with one voice for our needs in our country ,Nigeria. We denounce and disassociate ourselves from the methodologies of some home based terror groups/sects in the Northern part of Nigeria that have adopted violence and are unleashing carnage on the society in fighting their cause.   However, it should not be forgotten that the problems of these Home Terror groups in the North started when their needs were not met, and with lots of anomalies in their society. Now it’s spiraling and all nations are called to join in securing the region. All we are saying is listen to our cries now and not when things go bad. We are accessible and open for discussions on how to forge ahead in addressing the problems of unemployment with your support.
Mr. President Sir, ignoring the points raised here can have unpleasant consequences. We implore you to urgently address these points to halt the steadily growing number of angry and frustrated unemployed graduates who may be tempted to channel their knowledge and energy into negativities. God bless you, sir, as we await your speedy response and God bless Nigeria
By Ehis Abuya (National Coordinator, Association of Unemployed Graduates).
